Gender and sexuality is a significant topic we encounter in our everyday lives. Thus, raising and gaining awareness of LGBTQ issues should not be limited within, and exclusive to, the LGBTQ community. In light of the public consultation of the Gender Recognition Act; the “QT” case regarding the application for a HK dependent visa of a same-sex civil partner in Britain; and the Immigration Officer’s Court Case on Same-sex Spouse Benefits, discussions were brought up in mainstream media and the public. When children’s books with LGBTQ themes were withdrawn from the open shelves of the Hong Kong public libraries, parent groups and the publishing sector allied with LGBTQ organizations as the cilvl rights’ front. The queer community is no longer fighting and defeating alone. On the other hand, addressing public issues with a sex/gender angle or from a queer group is becoming a norm; a queer identity is just one of the many identities in the society.
We are delighted to see the growing interest of collaborations between sectors and groups in the society, hence the theme of “Connections” in the 3rd HKQLCF next year, in hopes of being a platform for further discussions and interactions of sex and gender issues.
“Come read our history. Co-write a new queerstory.”
The 3rd HKQLCF will be hosted in Central Courtyard, L1 Gallery and L2 Podium in JCCAC.
Central Courtyard: First and Second-hand literature booths, community booths, and diversify reading corner.
L1 Gallery: Gender and Sexuality friendly art exhibition, Exhibition on LGBTQ related Judicial Review, and a number of Human Library sessions and workshops
L2 Podium: 4-6 seminars and the closing ceremony will be hosted, seminar topics will include (but are not limited to): Literature, Diversified lust, Judicial Review and the LGBTQ movement, LGBTQ movement history and religion.
